Had two sets of farewells – Dee and Mike who left early this morning to make their way back to DC where they fly out tomorrow. It would be great to have them with us on a little more of the trip, but we will see them in a week or so when we get home. It was, of course, harder to say goodbye to our newly re-connected family on Nantucket.
David, Ann and Luke (Claire had to work) took us around this morning to some of the other parts of the island that many tourists might not see. We drove into some of the land conservation areas, and it was surprising to see how much undeveloped land Nantucket really has. We also visited a cool lighthouse and the smaller, more exclusive town on the far side of the island. We saw a cliff where homes either have to be moved or will eventually be lost to the ocean as the cliff recedes. It was nice seeing more than just the town and the beach.
We got back and had to say our goodbyes to everyone. It was amazing of Peter and Allison (and Greg) to share their home with us and David, Ann, Luke and Claire to help us feel so welcome as well. We hope to see them all in California so we can return the hospitality.
Peter drove us to the ferry in the afternoon, and we made it back to Hyannis. From there, we caught the Cape Flyer, a train that runs between Hyannis and Boston on the weekends in the summer. We did quite a bit of traveling today, but it was cool to first ride the ferry and then a train – lots of different experiences on this trip. We made it into Boston – where my brother Paul served his mission, and tomorrow we will get to explore the city for the first time and meet up with Peter and David’s sister Margret. We’re having a great time but moving into the home stretch.
